It's a requisite for vehicles over five years old that are due for registration renewal in NSW. The term Pink Slip originates from the historical colour of the paper it was printed on, although the actual inspection report these days is often delivered electronically, transitioning to what is now referred to as an E-Safety Check.

E-Safety Checks delve into examining crucial components of a vehicle including brakes, tyres, seatbelts, lights, and exhaust systems to name a few, ensuring they conform to the safety criteria laid out by RMS. If a vehicle successfully passes the inspection, the information is electronically submitted to RMS by the inspector. Consequently, vehicle owners can then proceed to renew their vehicle's registration online or in person.

However, if a vehicle fails to meet the required standards, it results in a fail report, compelling owners to repair all listed defects and seek a re-inspection. Vehicle owners are granted a 14-day period to rectify defects and present their vehicle for a reinspection.

Vehicle owners in NSW are obligated to obtain a Pink Slip/E-Safety Check for their vehicles more than five years old annually, to renew their vehicle registration.
